Diary of an old cheeser

Hi there! Like other blogs, this is my chance to wax lyrical (some might say talk utter cr*p) about a) what's happening in my life b) all of my pet obsessions in particular music, tv, movies, books and other generally connected things, quite often of the retro, old and "cheesy" variety. Hence the title of my blog. Feel free to leave a comment if the mood takes you. There's nothing like a good chinwag about one's favourite topics and besides I love to meet new people! Cheers, Simon

Au revoir Russell...

Hey y'all!

I'm a blogging part-timer now as you all know, but this story is worth sharing if you don't already know about it...

1. About bloody time!

2. A big, BIG hoorah for the appointment of Mr Moffatt! He's definitely produced some of the best stories in the new DW - not to say much more unorthodox, interesting ones than RTD - so this bodes very well. With him as lead writer I hope we get more of the same.

3. As a friend of mine has pointed out, this doesn't necessarily mean MASSIVE changes to the current DW style and format, if that. After all, from the the ratings/viewing figures point of view, RTD has proved that it's a winning formula (for better or for worse...and he definitely has his detractors). But it's still good news!

Laters!

OC x

PS I'm still enjoying the new series. The conclusion of the Sontaran story was satisfying if not particularly earth-shattering (car exhaust fumes = cloning gas? mmmm...), the Dr's Daughter was enjoyable if a bit flimsy plot wise, with a perky performance from Georgia Moffat and not much decent explanation as to her conception and the Christie one was the most lightweight and silly story yet. Zzzzz, indeed!

PPS Boooooo to Eurovision for taking DW off the air for another week. Then again I'm gonna be in Brighton with my hubbie and probably would have missed it, so it doesn't really matter that much to me. Ha!

PPPS Madonna's new album is growing on me, Duffy's one if marvellous and Portishead's is wrist-slashing.

PPPPS That really is all. Ta ta for now and hope you are all doing wondrously...

i'm surprised at how much I quite like the Madonna album! I wasn't expecting to, as I wasn't very keen on the leaks I had heard. There are some parts that do make me cringe, but overall I don't skip any songs and find the record quite light and fun!

Good to hear from you, OC. Yeah, we're pleased with Moffat's appointment too - I've loved his work since Press Gang in the early eighties. Hopefully we'll see a scarier, more gripping DW emerge from the glow of his new scripts... 2010 is a long time to wait though!

You know, I know it is just "fluff" but I loved the new Madonna CD from the first moment I heard it. I just love it. There I said it. And, I'm not ashamed to write or say it!

...I never want to like Madonna, but she simply FORCES me to love her!

That said, I am trying my best to try and like the new Portishead -- but it actually sort of grates my nerves and hurts my head!

    kisses from the edge,
    matty

I wonder if Steven will hire Russell to write the mid-season two-parters?!!

In light of the news, RTD did say he would, now, be able to watch "Doctor Who" again as a viewer... which suggests he won't be contributing to Series Five at all!

Hey Hots! I'm so sorry I haven't posted any comments on your marathon posts. So thanks for dropping by.

Yes, Madge's latest is a grower. I wouldn't rate it anywhere near as highly as "Confessions" but it's got some quite decent tracks! (He said oh so generously...)I like "Miles Away", "She's Not Me" for instance. Which parts make you cringe? Do tell!

Mr Bloggertropolis! Oh yes, you Press Gang/Julia Swalha (however you spell her name) fan, you! I do agree, with him onboard as lead writer, great things are surely afoot...

Matty - As I was saying, it was better than I expected, but not up to the standard of "Confessions"...I feel she is coasting on this album and following a trend rather than setting it...still she can't produce a classic every time. Her 90s not so good album was "Bedtime Stories" I reckon...But glad you like it anyway!

You're right about Portishead, have only listened to it once but it didn't grab me immediately....nothing as immediate as "Glory Box" or "All Mine"...

Kisses from the edge? Sounds a bit bad. Hang on in there Matty. We love you very much!!

Tim - My goodness, yes of course there is a chance that RTD will still be used as a writer! OMG! But as you say, if he's just a viewer, perhaps it might not happen...instead we'll get lots of Moffatt type writers...he he....

Ah, dear OC...so lovely of you to join us! Mwahaha.
I have to say Duffy's CD is growing on me too and seeing as I am a great fan of Etta James and SugarPie De Santo I ain't easy to please!! However, that said I am also enjoying ColdPlays latest offering.
I thought you'd be thrilled to see RTD disappear into a black hole. Over here, RTD means Ready To Drink and refers to those wek-as-water alcopop drinks the teenagers get into. How apt.

Yeah, I'm enjoying Duffy too (well, her album I mean!) although I tend to overplay stuff and then can't bear to hear it again for months - I did that to Amy Winehouse.

Did you see the Madonna concert on TV the other week? I thought she looked absolutely dreadful.

Cringe-worthy parts of Madonna's album includes the bit on "Heartbeat" when she goes "Hut hut, get down!" and I'm not too fond of the "Get stupid" mantra found on Give It To Me, which I otherwise love.

Madonna is surely sucking the life-force from those around her?

Hello Amanda - glad you like Duffy too. I have never been much of a Coldplay fan but I do admire their artistic integrity, haw haw haw.

Yus, good to see RTD giving up the mantle at long last, although we do have the "pleasure" of three DW specials from him next year...won't be til 2010 that we see the new Moffat produced Who and even then it will probably have traces of Russ's old format and styleeeee. After all, for better or for worse he has created a winning formula and the Beeb aren't easily going to ditch that.

Reluctant - Yeah, I guess Duffy might head the way of too much airplay and hype like Ms Winehouse. The latter is still amazingly talented though, in spite of her destructive tendencies.

I did see some of that Madge concert, yes! Didn't think she looked too bad but she's obviously trying to "act young" now. Her eye make-up when Jo Whiley was interviewing her was overdone I thought...

Hot Lunch - Yeah, those bits are slightly cringey! Somehow she just about pulls it off but I can't see her doing this kind of stuff in a decade or so's time...mind you, who's to say? Perhaps she WILL perform "Erotica" live in a zimmer frame...

Walter - Welcome! And my, what a cynical thing to say! How can you POSSIBLY accuse Madonna of parasitic tendencies?! The woman has surely made it ENTIRELY on her own, hasn't she? (!!)

We're still doing re-runs here at the moment, watched The idiot's Lantern last night. The 10 year old busy waving her Dr Who flag everytime he got something right. So cute. Can't wait for the next series!

RTD deserves a massive salute for all he has done though, I reckons. I feel he is a bit unfairly bashed sometimes, when after all he is responsible for getting Who back on and on excellent form. The Moff is ace though and will also be winningful.

    Eurovision? Ukraine woz robbed!

Amanda - I really enjoyed Idiot's Lantern even though it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. Loved Rose's 50s look and Maureen Lipman was a hoot as the posh/scary continuity announcer/alien!

Yes you have Seasons 3 and 4 to look forward to!

Boz - Hey there! Yes, you're right, even though I can be critical of Rusty I do take my hat off to him in that he was responsible for resurrecting the show and injecting it with new life...that cannot be denied. But hopefully the Moff (I like your nickname for him!) will work even greater wonders!!

I dunno about Duffy. I like the album and everything but she's NOT Dusty and I wish the meeja would stop saying she is. There's no comparison.

'Madonna's new album is growing on me'

For God's sake! Get to a doctor at once and have it removed. The next thing you'll know, you'll have conical moobs and a desire to adopt half of Malawi.

Nora - I can see why people make the Dusty comparisons, but yes, you can't really hold a candle to her.

Richard - Well, what can I say, I am honoured that the veritable Mr Madeley himself has visited my blog!! Hello sir!! And how's Judy??

Ha ha - very good - not that you've literally interpreted my words, or anything...

Well I must say, given that I've now sunk to the depths of mere part-time blogging I'm rather pleased by the amount of comments this post has amassed!! Thank you one and all!! Shows that perhaps I don't have to work so hard to retain people's attention after all...
