Diary of an old cheeser

Hi there! Like other blogs, this is my chance to wax lyrical (some might say talk utter cr*p) about a) what's happening in my life b) all of my pet obsessions in particular music, tv, movies, books and other generally connected things, quite often of the retro, old and "cheesy" variety. Hence the title of my blog. Feel free to leave a comment if the mood takes you. There's nothing like a good chinwag about one's favourite topics and besides I love to meet new people! Cheers, Simon

Pah!

I've just switched to Beta Blogger and am already having a couple of problems! Apparently I'm not the first as some of my fellow bloggers have had teething troubles too.

I was actually holding out on switching over for this very reason, but one of the last times I signed in to Blogger it only gave me the option of converting to the new version and not signing in in the normal way! Very sneaky!

Now it seems I can't post videos from You Tube....pah!! And I had a faberoony Fame video to share with y'all...I'm sure there is a way of getting round this but I'm not desperately technical.

Any suggestions anyone?

Ta!

I’ve had problems too, Simon. I tried to share the trailer for “Primeval” on new Blogger without success. I was surprised as ITV were actually inviting people to do so, seemingly despite any notions of copyright! In the end, I made do with a selection of screen caps. I’ve also found I can no longer change my avatar in the usual way by posting it to my blog and pasting the URL into my profile so, at the moment, I’m stuck with the same old picture of me! And, I’ve noticed my computer reloads all the images posted, since the switchover, every time I load my page instead of drawing the information from the caches.

Old Blogger wasn’t perfect though. I discovered it wouldn’t let you post more than nine pictures, when putting up that “Torchwood” gallery, without logging out, closing the window, then opening a new window and logging back in, in order to post the tenth and final image in a new post. I also had problems with paragraph breaks, which you may have noticed, and never the same problem twice, causing me to repost on numerous occasions! But it still isn’t consistent looking!! All of this is, of course, very time consuming and I’m sure we’re all busy people!!!

Also, take a look at your profile or any of the profiles of we unfortunates who have been forcibly evicted from old Blogger! All of the links, in favourite movies, music, books and interests, which enabled us to find Bloggers of similar interests, are now dead which surely makes this part of the blogging experience redundant. When I discovered that I was really disappointed!! No more chance discoveries of individuals with their own unique combination of tastes, which is one of the things that made it fun and pleasurable.

As for solutions, you could try setting up a second blog. You don’t necessarily have to do this with a new account but under the one you already have, as it still gives you the opportunity to customise it. To customise a converted Blog, I believe you have to upload a template tool, the use of which may cause you to lose some of your settings. With a new Blog the tool is already in place. My thoughts were to make a second Blog specifically for stuff that takes a while to load and keep the first for just text and accompanying pic thus benefiting both owner and reader. Hope my experience is of some help.

Hey Tim - thanks for coming back to me and for all your advice, appreciated.

Guess what -I managed to solve the problem with posting vids from YouTube - really very simple. You just copy and paste the embedded URL info into your post and then publish in the normal way! I looked up some help groups on Google where I was able to get the info. So you should be able to do the same thing too! The only thing is when you try to publish the post you sometimes get a message saying "Your HTML cannot be accepted". Something about a tag not being closed properly. I just ticked the box saying to ignore this information - okay maybe that's a bit naive but it doesn't seem to have caused any problems.

So now I can post videos again - and as you can see I have wasted no time in doing so! Hoorah!!

You're right about the profile thing though - all the links to other blogs via my "favourite things" are now dead! That's a great shame and I can't understand why they've done that. As you say it makes finding out about other fellow bloggers very difficult. I guess the only option now is to look at other people's blogrolls and hopefully you can discover some like-minded and interesting individuals that way. Oh well. Maybe I'll switch over to another type of Blogger at some point.

    Thanks again,
    Simon

Hang on in there, it will work eventually. I had loads of problems with the switch over but all works well now. Breathe deeply, don't hit your computer, and relax, two, three, four... breathe, two, three, four...
