How very odd...and very sad
And this is what's just happened to it now:
I can't quite believe it.
Oddly enough we're visiting again in just a few weeks. It will be completely bizarre to see the contrast.
Apparently the cause of the conflagration was a chip pan catching fire. Okay, so the pier (and Weston in general) has a tacky reputation, but what a tragic thing to occur (on a par with the burning down of the West Pier in Brighton which is now but a charred and blackened hulk...)
What do we all reckon?

I too have friends who live in Weston and have thus have strolled along the pier many times. It was tacky but it was also kind of lovely too - a big part of Weston-s-Mare. What makes it all even more sad is that a fortune has been spent renervating the pier to breathe new life into it. This is very sad. :-(

Steve - Indeed it is sad. Hate to sound morbid but it will be interesting to see the pier when I make my return visit to Weston in a few weeks - just to see the contrast. Shows how precariously built piers are too really.
